Cautionary Tales by Errollyn Wallen
Opera Collective Ireland. September 2025
This production is first-rate. A marvellously platformed hexagonal stage is edged with led strips whose colour change with every scene. Bulbs light up sequentially in conjunction with piano notes, and flash to accentuate loud bangs (Zia Bergin-Holly). Costumes (Jenny Whyte) and sets are dazzling and props, such as a fake moustache on a stick to denote a parent, are cleverly utilised and conceived. Direction (Sarah Baxter) and choreography are impeccable. Each of the performers is outstanding, both musically and dramatically, in their roles… this is a wonderful theatrical outing for all the family. - The Reviews Hub
Director Sarah Baxter evoked the anarchy of children at play, with the four cast members running about, changing characters and costumes, with the stage as busy as a pantomime. Their performances were about as far from staid ‘singing statues’ as you can imagine, bringing a panto-like energy that emphasised clarity and character…I expect the tour created a few more opera-curious kids. -The Journal of Music
Based on Hilaire Belloc’s classic poems, this fast-paced and clever production brings the antics of Rebecca, Jim, Henry, and Matilda hilariously to life. Their mischief and mayhem are matched by catchy music, dark humour, and a cast of unforgettable characters. With its playful moral twists, Cautionary Tales offers a brilliant live theatre experience that entertains while delivering just the right dose of mischief and message. Whether you’re young or young at heart, this is one family opera outing that’s as smart as it is fun.
